How Grades Work

How Grades Work

If you choose to make a course graded, you have a couple options:

  • Either grade with points, or percentages
  • Optionally weight assignment types

Pointed Grades

With point-based grading, you assign a score like X/Y points (e.g., 13/15 points). This option offers maximum flexibility in determining the value of each assignment.

Percent Grades

With percent grades, you grade each assignment with a percentage score. For example, 93%.

With percentage-based grading, you assign a percentage score (e.g., 93%). This is ideal when all assignments of the same type have equal weight, allowing you to focus on percentages instead of points.

Assignment Type Weights

If you use assignment type weights, a student's course grade is a weighted average of all their completed assignments. Weighted means that not every assignment contributes equally to the course grade. There are default assignment types, but you can also add your own.

For example, you might set Tests to count for 50% of the course grade, with Homework, Papers, and Quizzes making up the other 50%. You can adjust these weights when creating or editing a course. If a student hasn't completed any assignments of a certain type, that type isn't included in the course grade calculation.
